Excerpt:
I smashed my palms against my eyes, trying once more to blend the tears with the rain drops on my face, then headed to my room to strip out of my wet clothing. A hot shower sounded really good. Then I planned to drown myself in booze until I forgot what I had just seen: my so-called best friend in bed with my asshole boyfriend.
Ex-boyfriend, I reminded myself.
He was the one who had broken up with me, in his defensive anger over getting caught. Blaming me for his need to cheat. Saying that a guy couldn’t be left waiting for sex forever.
I hadn’t been waiting for forever. Just… for a better time.
I nearly choked on a laugh. Maybe Alexis had done me a real favor, after all. Causing me to dodge a bullet, so that I didn’t end up giving my virginity to a guy who couldn’t be faithful for a whole six months.
I had been raised to believe that the first time was supposed to be special. Not because my family had religious reasons for wanting me to wait—I certainly wasn’t expected to remain chaste until marriage. But they had always emphasized how important it was to be careful about who I was intimate with.
As I turned on the shower and waited for the water to warm, the doorbell rang. I ignored it the first time. And the second. There was no one I wanted to see right now.
But when the ringing turned to loud knocking, I paused.
Maybe Jessie—my roommate—had forgotten her keys again and was locked out. It certainly wasn’t the first time and it wouldn’t be the last. She was a damned near-genius in her studies, but in other things, she was a complete ditz.
I grabbed the bathrobe I rarely used and pulled it on, tying it rather haphazardly around my waist as I rushed to the door. Without taking the time to check the peephole, I yanked it open.
Nope.
That definitely wasn’t Jessie.
It was a guy.
No. Not a guy. A man. Older than I was, though I couldn’t guess by how much. I figured he had to be at least in his mid-thirties, yet at the same time, I felt a little flutter deep in my belly.
He was gorgeous.
And he was staring at me. No. Not at me.
At my bathrobe. At my body.
Heat rushed into my face as I realized that I didn’t know how long I had been standing there like a total idiot, gaping at him while my robe… well, I hadn’t tied it on correctly anyway and now the knot was coming loose. The front falling open. Not quite exposing my breasts to him, but darn close.
I tugged it back in place, more so that he wouldn’t see the way my nipples had hardened in response to how hot he was than trying to hide from his gaze. “Can I help you?”
He blinked several times. “Sorry, I—” He stopped and cleared his throat, though I kind of wished he wouldn’t. That deep, husky rasp was probably the sexiest thing I’d heard in a long time. “Is Jessie around?”
Damn. Of course he was here to see her. Some girls had all the luck. “No. Is she expecting you?”
He shuffled and shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. “Yeah. I’m Nolan.”
“Nolan? Her uncle Nolan?” I didn’t know if I was more shocked or relieved. He didn’t look old enough for that.
