Checking my watch, I noticed that the movie was due to start screening in less than five minutes. I tapped Allie’s shoulder several times to get her attention. “We should probably head inside.”
“Not yet.” She made a little pout, though I couldn’t tell if the gesture was meant to affect me or her boyfriend. “He wouldn’t stand us up. Would he, Jason?”
“He better not.” Jason glanced around. “There he is.” He lifted one hand from Allie’s shoulders to wave at someone behind me. “Pax, over here!”
I turned. My eyes widened and it was all I could do to keep my mouth from hanging open in shock.
I’ll admit I’ve always had a thing for nerdy guys. Thick-rimmed glasses and a shy smile will do more to turn me on than a ripped, muscular body any day. Allie has always known that, but she also tended to ignore it.
Her tastes in guys were definitely what everyone would consider more ‘conventional,’ and was certain that I would only have to meet the ‘right one’ to change my mind when it came to my preferences.
The guy Jason had called ‘Pax’ had both of those qualities I liked most. And he had something more. A rather disheveled, distracted quality that I found more interesting than I probably should.
His cheeks colored when he looked at me, and I wondered if it was because he was so late, or if there was some other emotion behind his reaction.
Jason did the introductions. “Pax, this is Luna.” He didn’t hesitate over my name and his friend didn’t blink an eye at it either, which I considered something to his credit. So many people had a tendency to laugh when they first heard it. “Luna, this is my roommate, Paxton.”
“Hi.” His name was rather unusual too. Maybe that was why he’d responded so well to mine.
He nodded and shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. “Hello.”
I kind of wished we had shaken hands. It would have been an excuse to touch him, but the moment had already passed. Jason handed him his ticket, then wound himself back around Allie again as we headed in to find our seats.
There was a lot of choice. We were nearly the only ones in there, but Jason and Allie chose to sit all the way in the back row, anyway.
Even before the lights went down, they were all over each other.
I rolled my eyes. Pax looked like he might be blushing, but it was hard to tell. I was half-tempted to suggest that the two of us sit elsewhere, but then the lights dimmed and the movie was about to start.
The music was interesting and the visuals were definitely beautiful. But when the dialogue began, I knew I was in trouble.
No subtitles.
I didn’t even know that movies like this would even be shown here. Most of the regular theater-goers had to speak and understand English. This was hardly an international hotspot, despite the large university population, so I doubted there were enough foreign students around to make showing a non-English film profitable.
It would definitely explain why this place was mostly empty at the moment.
I was leaning away from the entwined couple, which, due to the close settings of the chairs, meant that I was now very close to Pax. I became acutely aware of how good he smelled, and how hot and surprisingly solid his thigh felt as it was pressed against mine.
Had to bite back a moan.
Being near him like this was definitely turning me on.
